JoomSlot agents: bulk credit for resale, and the terms behind it

The requirements list on the old agent page was three lines long: a working Joomla website, a working JoomSlot install, and an account on joomslot.com. "That's all," it said. The scheme is closed now, along with the rest of JoomSlot, and nobody can apply. This page keeps a record of what it offered and what agents agreed to.

What an agent was

An ordinary JoomSlot site let guests play with demo points. To sell game credit to your own members for Bitcoin, you had to become an agent. Agents bought credit from joomslot.com in bulk, at a discount, and resold it through their site at the default rate of 100,000 points to one bitcoin. The difference was the agent's cut. That credit is the Total Gamepoints figure on the backend dashboard.

The old page listed these terms, as they stood in 2021:

• a discount of at least 50% on credit, rising to "up to 80%" for bigger orders
• a starter pack from BTC 0.0002, with a larger one at BTC 0.002
• no contract period, no monthly fee, no maintenance fee
• JoomSlot's API and Kennie.club BTCPay credentials set up for you by e-mail
• priority support

It also made much bigger promises about margins and business value, plus a claim to be the only complete gaming platform for Joomla. None of that could be checked then and there's nothing to check now, so I've left it out.

The agent terms

The separate agent terms put most of the responsibility on the agent:

• Security. The agent was responsible for the security of their own site and server.
• User data. Players' accounts and personal data were the agent's to protect.
• Withdrawals. The agent had to honour players' withdrawal requests. In practice that meant paying each one by hand, as the withdrawal guide describes.
• Cancellation. JoomSlot could cancel an agent's API access at any time.

Read that last point next to the third. If the API was cut, players' balances stopped meaning anything, but the agent still owed the withdrawals. Anything left on a hot wallet on the hosted BTCPay server (see the BTCPay plugin guide) sat on someone else's machine the whole time.

The legal problem

The scheme described itself as a way to earn money from a Joomla site. What it really meant was running a small online casino: taking players' money, holding their balances and paying their winnings. Doing that without a gaming licence is illegal in Malaysia and in most other countries. The supplier's terms left all of that with the agent, and so did the law.
