A small Joomla module that listed coin prices from CoinGecko

The settings screen fits in one picture: seven coins picked as blue tags (Binance Coin, Bitcoin, Cardano, Ethereum, XRP, Solana, Tether), a default currency of usd, and three currencies on offer: usd, gbp and vnd. The module's title on screen reads "Cryto price", typo included. It was the second, much smaller thing joomslot.com gave away alongside the JoomSlot component, and like the component it's retired. The download has gone.

What it did

You chose which coins to list and which fiat currencies visitors could pick from. On the page, the module showed a heading, a currency drop-down and one line per coin:

Those prices are from 2021, when the screenshot was taken. Bitcoin at 63,035 dollars dates it to a few weeks in the autumn of that year. The module fetched prices from CoinGecko every 15 minutes, with no API key, and was tested on Joomla 3.10.x.

Much of the old page's feature list was really a description of CoinGecko's free API as it stood in 2021: up to 15 requests a minute, more than 1,000 coins across over 400 exchanges, 30-plus endpoints. Those were CoinGecko's numbers, not the module's, and CoinGecko has changed its free plan since, so I wouldn't count on an old copy still pulling data.

The old page listed about 300 coins by name, including plenty that have since faded. A few of the well-known ones:

Terra (LUNA) and TerraUSD (UST) were on the list too. Both collapsed in 2022, which is a fair reminder of how old this data is.

If you want something similar

The idea is simple enough to rebuild: a module that calls a price API on a schedule, caches the result and prints a list. For a current Joomla version you'd want something maintained. This module, built for Joomla 3 (end-of-life since August 2023), isn't a sensible thing to install now even if you have the zip.
